Certified Delegates By State

As individuals are selected as delegates and alternates by each state and territory, they are certified to the DNC Secretary. It should be noted that the time when a state selects the actual individuals who serve as delegates and alternates may be considerably after the time when that state’s primary or caucus is held. In this regard, states that held primaries in February 2008 may not select actual delegates until May or June 2008. Additionally, caucus states generally progress from one-tier to the next caucus tier over many weeks and months. It is only after a delegate has been officially selected by a state and certified to the DNC that the DNC is able to announce how many delegates have been certified for each presidential candidate.

At this time, there are 4,439 delegates casting 4,234 delegate votes

Certified Delegate Reports

Why do these numbers differ from what the media is reporting?

The delegate figures presented in these reports include the actual certification numbers of pledged delegates made to the DNC Secretary by the states. After a state selects its delegates, the State Party certifies to the DNC Secretary the names of those individuals and the presidential candidates to whom they are pledged.

In their reporting, media outlets often include projections and estimates of the allocation of delegates between presidential candidates. Additionally, some media outlets include the public endorsements of unpledged delegates (aka “super delegates”).

Since unpledged delegates do not formally cast their vote until the Convention, their numbers are not included in this map. These are the actual pledged delegate figures certified by State Democratic Parties to the DNC.

Why do these numbers differ from those in the delegation allocation map?

These reports show the number of pledged delegates each state has certified to the DNC Secretary. The delegate allocation map shows the overall number of pledged and unpledged delegates assigned to each state by the DNC. Sometimes the numbers may be off due to a state only selecting a portion of its pledged delegates one time, but selecting another portion of delegates at another time (i.e. a state may select its district-level delegates in March, but select its at-large and PLEO delegates in May).
